Diversity, Inclusion, & IT Community

In an effort to grow and strengthen the IT Community, and in keeping with one of the primary goals of OIT's Diveristy Action Plan, employees took several opportunities throughout 2019 to develop diversity and inclusion practices. The Employee Appreciation Week sponsored by HR provided several valuable opportunities for camaraderie to develop; many individuals felt a greater sense of community through their recognition within the Spirit of Excellence program; and various other events helped promote diversity and inclusion throughout the year.

Auburn's Department of Human Resources hosted the first annual Employee Appreciation week in 2019, and it provided several incredible opportunities for employees to get to know each other.

As part of the designated Department Appreciation Day, OIT hosted a picnic lunch which allowed time for visiting, yard games, and musical entertainment provided by three members of our staff.

The following day, several OIT employees attended the Administrative Professionals Conference where they got to particpate in unique team-building activities and hear speakers sharing messages on the theme of "Happy, Whole, & Healthy."

During the Employee Recognition Program, in addition to the recognition of our Spirit of Excellence winners, 18 OIT employees were recognized for years of service. Together, those 8 represent a combined 245 years of service at Auburn University!

At the end of the week, several units came together to sponsor a picnic open to all employees, and several of our staff had the opportunity to spend time with each other and with other units across campus.

Every month, Auburn University recognizes as many as four employees, representing four different groups, with the Spirit of Excellence award. Given the fact that Auburn has over 2000 Administrative and Professional staff, OIT was honored to have 6 of our employees recognized in 2019:

  • Michelle Foshee in January
  • Alex Shipp in February
  • Barbara Cosby in March
  • Frank Newland in September
  • Deepa Devarakonda in October
  • Julia Zhu in November

We are proud of these employees and grateful for their contributions to our campus!

Every year, different events occur within OIT, and while the actual events may differ, the end goal is the same - embrace diversity and inclusion and promote a sense of community. In 2019, some of the events that members of our staff participated in are:

  • A Women in IT Luncheon, sponsored by the Project Management Office;
  • Auburn University's Family Fun Day event;
  • Retirement receptions for Lee Stoker, Katy Ponder, and Mike Watkins;
  • An ice cream social recognizing OIT's 86% participation in the annual Faculty/Staff Campaign;
  • A Breast Cancer Awareness event with handouts provided by an employee's mother who beat breast cancer;
  • An OIT meeting with a special presentation from General Burgess regarding IT and the University;
  • A Thanksgiving potluck luncheon; and
  • An annual event for all University IT staff to recap the year and consider plans for the next year.
