About the Provost

Auburn University Provost, Dr. Timothy R. Boosinger

Dr. Timothy R. Boosinger was appointed Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University on June 22, 2012. In this position, he oversees the academic programming for twelve colleges and is responsible for fostering the advancement of the University's strategic plan. In total, twenty-five academic support units and colleges report directly to the Provost. These units focus on the instructional, research, and outreach missions of the institution, operating under a total budget of $290 million. He currently serves as chair of the Enrollment Management Council, the University Campaign Feasibility Task Force, and the Efficiency Task Force.

Dr. Boosinger served as Interim Provost from June 2011-June 2012, and Dean of Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine from 1995-2011. Prior to being appointed Dean, he served as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1993-1995, having joined the Auburn University faculty in 1983. He has served multiple terms as a university senator and has chaired search committees for university leadership positions, most recently the search committee for the dean of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences.

As Provost, Dr. Boosinger led a state wide, five-year strategic planning process, setting aggressive goals that are enhancing student success and diversifying enrollment, supporting faculty excellence, strengthening the University's reputation, advancing research scholarship and creative work, promoting public engagement, and focusing resources on institutional mission and priorities. Working with campus leaders, faculty, staff, and students, Boosinger has led the following initatives:

  • Developed a consensus for the implementation of a new and more strategic approach to allocating and budgeting University resource.

  • Implemented a new strategic faculty hiring process designed to encourage interdisciplinary research and enhance the University's competitive position both nationally and internationally.

  • Appointed by the president to administered the development of a partnership that led to the 2015 opening of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Auburn campus.

  • Enhanced the growth of international partnerships supporting growth in study abroad (increased 27%), and active international agreements (increased 400%).

  • Developed student success strategies that helped improved retention rates and moved the University's six-year graduation rate from 68% in 2013 to 72% in just two years.

  • Created a partnership with EverSpring Inc. to increase Auburn's number of fully online distance degree programs. In addition, Boosinger encouraged the development of over 150 distance education courses in support of the core curriculum.

  • In 2014-15, developed and currently implementing an international student pathway program called Auburn Global to increase international undergraduate student enrollment to 1,000 by 2018.

  • Challenged the University to redefine its role in the development of e-learning programs, by designing a budget model that encourages the development of innovative e-learning programs, creating incentives for faculty to engage in new approaches to learning, evaluating the feasibility of a common mobile platform and developing new "engaged student learning" classrooms.

  • Established university priorities for the construction of over $220 million in new academic buildings designed to support advanced innovations in learning and teaching. Contributed significantly to the preparation of documents and site visit plans for the successful reaffirmation of the University's accreditation by SACS Commission on Colleges in 2013.

  • Played an integral role in establishing strategic priorities for Auburn’s current comprehensive campaign, Because This is Auburn – A Campaign for Auburn University, and specific unit campaign goals for all academic units. The university’s goal is to raise at least $1 billion by the end of 2017.

  • Fostered consensus building and shared governance as evidenced by the senate's approval of new guidelines for the lecturer title series, implementation of the clinical and research faculty promotion criteria, new guidelines for the scholarship incentive policy, expansion of the ombuds program to include students, instituted a formal five-year administrative review process for all deans, department heads/chairs, and directors, and added an early alert grade reporting system for first and second year students.

Boosinger has held National leadership positions including six years of experience on the American Veterinary Medical Association's Council on Education that accredits all colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada, plus four schools in the United Kingdom, three in Australia, and one in New Zealand. In addition, during 2006-2009, Dr. Boosinger served as an officer for the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges, serving as president in 2007-2008.

He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1976 and a PhD in pathology in 1983, both from Purdue University. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.
