It is important to consider adding a statement to a course syllabus to address the use of AI. There are many ways AI can be used including, but not limited to brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, rewriting a student’s work, and problem-solving. Consider the following when deciding whether any use of AI will be allowed in the course:

  • Will AI always be allowed for use with completing assignments, etc.?

  • Will AI be allowed if students cite their use of AI in their assignments?

  • Is AI allowed for certain purposes such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or some other purpose?

  • Will AI never be allowed for use with completing assignments, etc. in this course?

Based on your response to the above questions, you can craft an AI statement for your syllabus that describes what is authorized and unauthorized AI usage in your class.
