As the Office of Institutional Research Director, Dr. Matthew Campbell provides institutional data and analytics to support leadership enterprise-wide. Through collection, transformation, and analysis, Campbell and his team provide structure and context to institutional data to support decision-making and policy development across the campus.
An institutional research professional for over 20 years, Campbell joined the Office of Institutional Research as a Graduate Research Assistant in 1997 and returned in 2005 as an Analyst. Since 2011, Campbell has served as the University’s primary data source for many of its strategic initiatives, including institution rankings, SACSCOC reaffirmation of accreditation, program-level accrediting, strategic budgeting, and data support to grant-awarding agencies such as the National Science Foundation and National Institute for Health. In addition, Campbell is the primary data steward for the institution’s compliance reporting to governmental agencies such as the US Department of Education and the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.
Campbell also plays a primary role in increasing data literacy across the campus by expanding analytical tools and growing an understanding of industry metrics. His experience includes serving as the lead designer for the student and course and faculty data sources currently used across the institution to support information programs such as Qlik, the OneAuburn Data Warehouse, and Salesforce.
A native of Athens, Alabama, Campbell holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in public administration and an EdD in higher education administration, each from Auburn University. In 2022, the Southern Association for Institutional Research honored him at their 49th annual conference with the James R. Montgomery Outstanding Service Award for his leadership of the organization.
