COSAM Office of Student Services Offers Encouragement and Goodies to Students During Finals

The Office of Student Services of the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) helped make finals a little easier on students last week by offering free snacks, Scantrons and even a few encouraging words all week.

“I am so loving this,” said COSAM student Lucy Chae as she gathered some snacks and hot chocolate. “I have a psychology class tomorrow and I really needed to go get a Scantron, but the book store is kinda far and it’s cold out there. I was here to study and when I saw the sign that said “Free Scantrons,” I thought, “thank goodness!”

Along with hot chocolate and sweet and salty snacks, students were given the opportunity to take an encouraging written affirmation with phrases such as “Stay positive, work hard, make it happen.”

Anna Allen, an academic advisor in the Office of Student Services, had the idea for the nice gesture for the students.

“I just felt like we needed to do something more for the students during finals because they’re just kind of isolated and we don’t really see them,” Anna said. “It’s just to let them know that we’re here and we support them and we want them to do well.”

Dr. Beth Yarbrough, director of Student Services, said she thought it was a great idea and one the department will continue each semester.

“It’s just a way to support them through a hard week and encourage them to take care of themselves a little bit, too,” Beth said, adding that students often come to their office for more serious reasons. “They come in and they’ve got to get something accomplished or there’s something we’re asking them to do … this is just for them.”
