DMS professor Nane receives funding from the Alabama Center of Excellence

Dr. Erkan Nane has received funding as co-investigator on a three-year grant from the Alabama Center of Excellence run by the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. The project entitled “Groundwater 2070 in Baldwin County, Alabama Under a Changing Climate and Threatened by Seawater Intrusion: From Sustainability to Vulnerability” is a collaboration with geologists from the University of Alabama. The objective of this project is to study the quantity and quality of groundwater in Baldwin County, Alabama (AL) affected by climate change and threatened by seawater intrusion, and their optimization to support sustainability of freshwater resources for residences in the coastal area in the next half century.

Students at FAMU learn about graduate school at Auburn and NSF Research Traineeship program

“It was exciting to finally meet one of our advisors to our NSF Research Traineeship program, Dr. Richard Gragg Associate Director and Associate Professor in environmental science at FAMU. It’s been difficult to promote a new program in COVID conditions, but I was happy to inform the interested upperclassmen of FAMU of Auburn’s NSF Traineeship increasing the future climate resiliency in the southeastern United States, with funded positions with $34K stipends and tuition waivers,” said Katie Brown, program coordinator. “Our applications are now open again to all interested upperclassmen.”

Research experience opportunities for first year students available in new pilot biology course

“This pilot project gives us a chance to help undergraduate students engage in research early on,” said Min Zhong, senior lecturer in the Department of Biological Sciences. “Students participating will develop functional lab skills, improve their scientific communication, gain hands-on experience collaborating with other students, and benefit them in the post-graduation setting.”

Yanzhao Cao awarded a $300K Department of Energy (DOE) grant.

Yanzhao Cao has been awarded a $300K Department of Energy (DOE) grant for the project Reliable and Efficient Machine Learning for Leadership Facility Scientific Data Analytics. The project was one of five chosen following a highly competitive peer-review process under DOE Funding Opportunity Announcement, “Data-Intensive Scientific Machine Learning and Analysis,” sponsored by the Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) within DOE’s Office of Science. This is a collaborative project with Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL) as the lead institution. Our affiliate faculty and ORNL Senior Staff Member Dr. Guannan Zhang is the lead PI.
