Two Auburn mathematicians travel to Mexico to develop partnership with the Autonomous University of Coahuila
Nedret Billor, Coordinator of Statistics and Data Science Programs, Professor of statistics at Auburn University, and Yanzhao Cao, the Don Logan Endowed Chair of Mathematics, Professor, Graduate Program Officer, and Associate Chair at Auburn University, traveled to the Autonomous University of Coahuila, or UAdeC, in May 2022 to initiate conversations about opportunities for academic collaboration as well as joint research projects between the two academic institutions.
The university, located in Saltillo, Mexico, welcomed Billor and Cao from Auburn’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics to the state school. During their visit, they met with Juan Manuel Morales Santoyo, general coordinator for international relations; Cristóbal Noé Aguilar González, director of research and postgraduate studies; and Irma Delia García Calvillo, director of the Applied Mathematics Research Center.
“Our visit to UAdeC was extremely productive, truth be told that it exceeded our expectations. Based on our interactions during many faculty meetings at different units of the UAC, it was clear that the UAdeC is a well-established university with strong undergraduate and graduate programs and active research groups in physical and social sciences, and engineering. We, as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, are looking forward to a collaboration in the areas of applied mathematics, statistics, and data science with the UAdeC. However, this collaboration should not be restricted to mathematics/statistics and data science since the UAdeC has a strong interest in establishing international collaboration with other units in COSAM and other colleges across campus,” said Billor and Cao.
The partnership will provide opportunities throughout the two institutions.
“Our long-term goal is to establish a collaboration between Auburn University and UAdeC that includes student and faculty exchanges, research visits, and study abroad opportunities,” said Ash Abebe, Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
