Writing Enriched Courses
To support students’ success as thinkers and communicators, the University Writing Committee (UWC) has created a new writing enriched (WE) course designation. WE courses may be at any undergraduate level, including 5000-level mixed undergraduate/graduate courses, provided students have opportunities to practice writing skills and strategies that they may use in their discipline, profession, and field. Assignments may be informal (writing to learn) or formal (writing to communicate), and they may include a range of genres and modes, such as recommendation reports, scientific posters, case studies, or ePortfolios, among others.
Please read through the complete WE course certification criteria and process, examine sample WE course certification memos from Biosystems Engineering and Nutritional Sciences, and contact universitywriting@auburn.edu with any questions.
Instructional Support
University Writing provides instructional support via writing across the curriculum (WAC) events that introduce evidence-based principles for the effective teaching of writing across disciplines. See our Open Educational Resource for asynchronous support.
University Writing offers professional development workshops centered on the teaching of writing. Topics may include meaningful assignment design, effective feedback, teaching with generative artificial intelligence, facilitating peer review, STEM writing, and more. See our Events page for open registration events and our Workshops and Presentations page for instructions on scheduling an event specifically for your College, department, or program.
In the WAC Academy, teams of faculty, staff, and administrative professionals work through a collaborative process of learning, reflection, planning, creation, and assessment of writing, with the goal of deepening students’ learning of disciplinary content. Participants will learn how to use writing to teach significant disciplinary concepts, clarify disciplinary expectations for student writing, design and scaffold meaningful assignments, and integrate peer and instructor feedback.
Faculty and Staff Writing Support
Periodically, University Writing may offer events and opportunities that support faculty and staff in their own writing. See our Events page for more information, including specific dates and registration links.
This workshop is designed to help participants write more effective grant proposals by offering strategies for identifying what funding sources are looking for, tailoring research ideas to fit the call for proposals, and developing a compelling narrative that will get ideas funded.
University Writing offers a mindful writing retreat that aims to help faculty of all ranks develop and refine healthy writing habits and make progress on research or creative scholarship. Participants will integrate wellbeing into their writing processes through contemplative practices such as yoga, meditation, and reflective writing. They will also enjoy ample shared writing time and community conversations about writing and academic life.
