Who can take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment? 

First-year students who have been accepted to Auburn University and have an Auburn login can take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment to determine their placement for their first mathematics course at Auburn.

Do I have to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment? 

Students are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment if they plan to take their first college math course at Auburn University and

• have not taken the ACT or SAT and would like to take a higher math than MATH 1000; and
• do not have AP/IB, dual enrollment, or transfer credit for math and would like to take a higher math than MATH 1000; or 
• have an ACT or SAT math subsection score but would like to try to place into a higher math than their standardized assessment math score permits (see placement guidelines).

When should I take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment? 

The ALEKS Math Placement Assessment is available now through AU Access. Students should plan to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment at the earliest time possible when they can focus their efforts on performing their best. At orientation, students will meet with an academic advisor and register for courses. If students plan to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment to determine their mathematics course placement, it is important that the assessment is taken at least two weeks prior to their orientation session.

Do I need to answer all the questions on the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment?

Yes, once a student starts the assessment, they are required to answer all the questions and finish the assessment. If a student does not answer all the questions before the time limit of 2.5 hours is reached, the attempt will be discarded, no score will be generated, and the student would need to take the assessment over again from the beginning.

How many times can I take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment?

Students can take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment up to three times. After the first attempt, the following requirements must be met:

• To take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment a second time, you must:
  • 1. Wait at least 48 hours since the first attempt; AND
    2. Spend a minimum of 5 hours working on ALEKS modules.

• To take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment a third time, you must:
  • 1. Wait at least 48 hours since the second attempt; AND
    2. Spend a minimum of 8 hours working on ALEKS modules (this is in addition to the 5 hours from the previous attempt).

How will Auburn know which score is my highest score?

Any assessment score – ACT Math, SAT Math, ALEKS Math Placement Assessment – that a student has submitted will be available in the student record and the score designating the highest course placement will be prioritized. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that scores from each of their attempts on the ACT/SAT are sent to Auburn. Scores from the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment will automatically be entered into the student’s records.

What if I don’t take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment before orientation?

If a student has not taken the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment prior to participating in orientation, the student will only be eligible to register for MATH 1000 during orientation^*, unless one of the qualifications below applies: 

• You have a standardized math test score(s) on file that qualifies you for placement in a higher course than MATH 1000.
• You have college credit through AP/IB, dual enrollment, or transfer credit. 

^*Students taking Aleks after orientation have no guarantee of a seat when trying to register for a course.
