19th Annual Summer Bridge Program an Adventure

The 19th Annual Summer Bridge Program was held on June 7-July 2, 2015 on the Auburn University main campus. Nineteen participants were selected with an average ACT score of 23.5 and an average GPA of 3.74. This outstanding group were from three states: Alabama (13), Georgia (4), and Texas (2). All nineteen plan to major in pre-professional programs or curricula in sciences and mathematics.

Former Professor Andreas Illies Passes Away

Andreas Illies, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 1984 to 2009, passed away on May 9, 2015 after a long illness. He taught extensively at all levels, including Freshman courses, Concepts of Science, undergraduate-level Physical Chemistry, and graduate-level Physical Chemistry courses. He maintained a productive research laboratory studying gas-phase ion-molecule reactions, published 71 papers, and mentored numerous graduate students. He also performed valuable service to the department, COSAM, and the University by serving on multiple committees, as a student advisor, and in many other ways. We mourn his passing, remembering him as a fine colleague, friend, and mentor to many students. His obituaries have appeared in the May 17 Opelika-Auburn News (link) and in the July 20 issue of Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN; link).

Students promote wildlife conservation through Tigers for Tigers

Students from the Department of Biological Sciences have teamed up with Tigers for Tigers, a national coalition that joins academic institutions that have a tiger mascot to help spread awareness of the survival challenges tigers face, including habitat destruction, poaching and pet trade.

COSAM alumnus named vice president for production finance for Universal Television

Chris Cilluffo, mathematics '95, has been named vice president for production finance for the Universal Television Studio finance team. Cilluffo has been with Universal Television for six years, most recently in the role of production controller. He served as lead accountant for NBC's television show, "Parenthood." Before joining Universal Television, Cilluffo was a show accountant on various television series over a span of nine years.

Thomas named Charles W. Barkley Endowed Professor

Ed Thomas, professor in the Department of Physics, has been selected as a Charles W. Barkley Endowed Professor. In this role, Thomas will serve as a diversity faculty mentor in the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs. The Charles W. Barkley Endowed Professorships are funded by former Auburn basketball star Charles Barkley to support underrepresented minority professors at Auburn with superior credentials in teaching, research, and service in their disciplines, and a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity. His appointment is effective in August.

Isbell receives Academy of General Dentistry’s Distinguished Service Award

Gordon Isbell, chemistry '76, received the 2015 Distinguished Service Award by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). The award recognizes an AGD council, committee or task force member who has exhibited outstanding leadership capabilities and whose contributions have resulted in significant and fundamental advances toward fulfilling AGD’s overall mission. Since the award’s inception in 1986, only 31 of AGD’s 39,000 members have received the honor.

Alumna Spotlight: Iris Hill

Iris Hill is an actress, singer and dancer who has been featured in print ads and commercials for companies such as Apple, Wells Fargo, the NFL, Purina and Virgin America. After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Auburn in pre-veterinary/zoology and master’s degree in conservation biology, she went on to fulfill her dream of working in the entertainment industry. She has trained extensively in Los Angeles and at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and has landed roles in television, film and theatre working alongside stars such as Jane Lynch, Mel B and Joey Fatone. In her spare time, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native enjoys being around animals, helping out with her favorite philanthropic organizations and cheering on her beloved Auburn Tigers.
