Former Professor Andreas Illies Passes Away
Andreas Illies, a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry from 1984 to 2009, passed away on May 9, 2015 after a long illness. He taught extensively at all levels, including Freshman courses, Concepts of Science, undergraduate-level Physical Chemistry, and graduate-level Physical Chemistry courses. He maintained a productive research laboratory studying gas-phase ion-molecule reactions, published 71 papers, and mentored numerous graduate students. He also performed valuable service to the department, COSAM, and the University by serving on multiple committees, as a student advisor, and in many other ways. We mourn his passing, remembering him as a fine colleague, friend, and mentor to many students. His obituaries have appeared in the May 17 Opelika-Auburn News (link) and in the July 20 issue of Chemical and Engineering News (C&EN; link).
