Kim receives a 2nd place award at the Undergraduate Research Symposium of AU

Published: 04/26/2016

The Undergraduate Research Symposium of AU took place on April 13, 2016. Three award winners in each of four categories were selected from over 100 submissions.

For the oral presentation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Mr. DoYon Kim received a 2nd place award for his work on Variations of Toeplitz' Conjecture. Toeplitz conjectured in 1911 that every Jordan curve contains the vertices of a square. Such squares are called inscribed squares. There are many strong partial results, but the problem is still open. For more see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inscribed_square_problem.

DoYon studied and showed the existence of various strongly inscribed polygons, where one also requires that the interior of the polygon is part of the region enclosed by the Jordan curve. His undergraduate research advisor and mentor is Andras Bezdek.
