Dr. Christopher J. Easley, the C. Harry Knowles Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is the recipient of the 2019 AES Electrophoresis Society Mid-Career Achievement award.

“The AES Electrophoresis Society is thrilled to celebrate Professor Easley. He has made innovative contributions to the dynamic analysis of small amounts of chemically complex samples, with important applications to better understanding diseases such as diabetes” said Rodrigo Martinez-Duarte, the current president of the society.

Dr. Easley will receive the award during the society’s annual meeting in California from October 13 – 18, 2019. He has also been invited to speak at a plenary awards lecture at SciX 2019 and will have a session organized in his honor.

“With core expertise in analytical chemistry, we focus our efforts on developing fast, tiny, bioanalytical tools to study cells important in diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. This work—and awards that come from it—wouldn’t be possible without strong support from the department, from the college, from Auburn University, and from funding agencies like the NIH and NSF. I am very grateful for this support and for the recognition from the AES Electrophoresis Society,” explained Dr. Easley.

The Easley Research Group uses bioanalytical chemistry to help understand how cell and tissue functions are impacted by these diseases. His work in Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) continues to make important advancements and impact in this area of research.

He is also a board member of Auburn’s Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Program, a program in which more than 50 faculty members participate throughout the university campus. Dr. Easley attended the first Boshell conference when he was completing his post-doctoral work in 2008. More than a decade later, he actively participates on the board which aims to improve the lives of all people with diabetes. “I’m proud to be part of this group. Boshell members do some great research across several disciplines, generating over 100 peer-reviewed publications per year at Auburn,” said Dr. Easley. The 13th annual Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Day will be held in February/March 2020 at the Hotel at Auburn University & Dixon Conference Center.

“Dr. Easley has had a tremendous scientific and leadership impact on the Boshell Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases Research Program,” said Dr. Robert Judd, Professor of Pharmacology, Department of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology, and Director of the Boshell program. “His novel microfluidic systems and small-volume immunoassays have allowed us to study pancreatic and adipocyte systems in ways previously impossible due to the limits of analyte detection.  Dr. Easley’s broad analytical expertise has provided the Boshell program with the means to further improve our understanding of the dynamics of endocrine biology critical to both diabetes and obesity.   In addition, as a member of the Boshell Board of Directors, Dr. Easley has provided visionary leadership, resulting in significant programmatic growth during his time in the program.”
