COSAM’s Marcelo A. Kuroda Granted NSF CAREER Award to Investigate Properties of Heterostructures formed with Ultrathin Materials

Two-dimensional materials are few-atom-thick crystals that have attracted the scientific community since their isolation in 2004.  Unprecedented physical properties can emerge in multilayers formed with different two-dimensional materials that preserve their sharp crystalline interfaces. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has granted Dr. Marcelo A. Kuroda a $536,000 CAREER Award.  This prestigious award is given for his innovative perspective to understand and control the properties of these layered systems using theory and atomistic calculations. The project entitled Modulation of Interlaying Coupling in Heterostructures based on Two-Dimensional Materials is supported by the Condensed Matter and Materials Theory program and EPSCoR co-funding.

COSAM Student Participates in Quantum Key Distribution Project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Davis Arthur received awards including the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) Outstanding Sophomore Award and the Department of Physics Sophomore Award. This 4.0 physics major will be spending his summer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee learning about quantum key distribution to encrypt and secure data transmissions.

COSAM Alumna Focuses on Research and Development with 3D Printing

Sarah Jo Crotts, Biomedical Sciences ’15, is currently a research scientist and lab manager in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech, Center for 3D Medical Fabrication. She manufacturers devices in 3D printing labs with a recent focus on the tracheal splint. Sarah Jo is a part of all manufacturing and operations and assists in research and development.

COSAM’s Office of Information Technology Implementing Two New Services

COSAM’s Office of Information Technology is working on two new projects to improve performance and infrastructure for the entire college.  First, they are creating a new Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution this summer in conjunction with Office of Information Technology (OIT). Faculty will find an easy-to-use Windows 10 interface with pre-loaded software by major to engage their students.

Auburn University’s fourth annual Tiger Giving Day, held on February 21, was a success thanks to the nearly 4,000 Auburn alumni and friends who supported 31 projects across the university.  Three of these projects were in COSAM – Fighting Drug Resistant Bacteria in Dirt; Rebuilding the Davis Arboretum Bridge, and STEM Students Studying Water Quality Abroad.  Each was fully funded, so be on the lookout for progress updates.

Over 30,000 people including more than 1,650 teams from 40 nations gathered in Louisville, Kentucky from April 24-30 for the 12th annual VEX Robotics World Championship. “Throughout the competition, the student’s boundless enthusiasm and strong work ethic culminated with heart-pounding final matches that truly showcases the extraordinary talent of our champions,” said Tony Norman, Co-founder and President of VEX Robotics. “This week, the excitement of our robotics community will create the problem solvers and innovators of tomorrow.”
