“This tube contains the extracted DNA strands for the famous Auburn Oaks,” said Alex Harkess, the College of Agriculture's Assistant Professor and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology's Faculty Investigator.

Harkess and Leslie Goertzen, associate professor Department of Biological Sciences, are collaborating to decode the DNA of the Auburn Oaks as a result of the Tiger Giving Day 2021 project.

“At HudsonAlpha, the cells of the leaves were broken down and then the DNA was isolated for analysis,” he added. “Next, we’ll generate raw genome sequencing data that students in several graduate and undergraduate courses will analyze.”
