COSAM offers new forensics track option
Students interested in a career in forensics can now pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry with an option in forensics that includes the potential for hands-on experience and a possible internship through the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS).
“Forensic science technicians and criminal investigators are highly in-demand in the state of Alabama,” said Meredith Powell, academic advisor for the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM. “With 10 ADFS labs, students have an incredible opportunity apply for internships and, if selected, to learn how these labs work while earning their degree.”
“We toured ADFS and built this new track based off what they are looking for in their actual applicants,” Powell explained. “So, students will have an edge to become employed by the state.”
And that job could lead to a rewarding career in forensics.
“This option puts students in the best possible position to excel and succeed in forensic chemistry,” said Doug Goodwin, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. “The panel of prescribed chemistry courses provides the necessary foundation, and through internship opportunities, students will gain solid experience with the application of mass spectrometry and other essential analytical instrumentation.”
Chris Goldsmith is the Undergraduate Program Officer, or UPO.
“Instead of trying to secure an internship after graduation, this new option gives students the chance to earn a solid degree in chemistry and have an opportunity to learn how to work in a state lab before they finish their degree,” explained Goldsmith. “It really is preparing today’s students for tomorrow's careers.”
