History

Established by The Nature Conservancy in 1989, the Alabama Natural Heritage Program is part of NatureServe, an international network of heritage programs established in all 50 states, Canada, and Latin America. The program was first housed in offices of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) State Lands Division (SLD) in Montgomery, although staff were still employed by the Nature Conservancy. In 1996, the program moved to the campus of Huntingdon College in Montgomery where it remained until 2005. In 2006, the ALNHP moved to Auburn University and joined the Environmental Institute. After the move to Auburn, employment of ALNHP staff was transferred from The Nature Conservancy to Auburn University. The ALNHP is now part of the Auburn University Museum of Natural History in the Department of Biological Sciences.
