Catherine Kenny wins SCORE’s Terry Marbut Excellence in Robotics Teaching Award
“Robotics can make a huge difference in the life of a student,” said Jennifer Spencer, assistant director of the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE. “This year’s recipient of the Terry Marbut Excellence in Robotics Teaching Award is an example of what an incredible difference a teacher made with her excitement and dedication for her robotics team.”
Gameday physics event captivates tailgaters
Minds were enriched and children and parents alike were fascinated by the Gameday Physics event hosted by the Auburn Physics Department and COSAM Outreach on Saturday, Oct. 21 from 2 – 4 p.m. in the Academic and Classroom Learning Complex (ACLC). The event brought the wonders of physics to the public prior to gameday kickoff through a series of interactive exhibits and demonstrations.
Jonathan Jones, an Auburn University alumnus and four-year starting cornerback, founded the Next Step Foundation in 2019 to mentor and educate youth on practical life applications and professional development. In the last four years, Next Step Foundation has created an annual football camp in his hometown of Carrollton, Georgia, partnered with the Auburn Sustenance Project to raise funds, package, and distribute meals to families in need, and joined Play Like a Girl as a National Ambassador to help girls everywhere reach their potential on and off the field by leveraging the skills they learn on the field to propel them into STEM careers. Jones’ Next Step Foundation also formed a partnership with iRobot and together, they added a STEM lab at a school in Boston in Feb. 2023.

Science Matters summer enrichment camps concluded the 2023 season with “Full STEM Ahead” and “Storybook STEM” sessions. This interactive and engaging summer enrichment program is hosted by the Office of STEM Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics.
SCORE Spotlight: VEX GO Robots - Working together to learn and build new skills during the summer
During the second week of Southeastern Center of Robotics Education’s (SCORE) summer camps, participants were challenged to work together so they could compete with their robots. Entering second and third grade students built VEX GO robots and applied the engineering design process as well as math and science skills needed for continuous improvement of their design.

Participants in Science Matters Summer Enrichment Camp learned about reducing, reusing and recycling during the June 12-16 week. The camp, hosted by the Office of STEM Outreach, taught students the importance of being green.

During Advanced 3D Printing summer camp hosted by the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, entering seventh and eighth grade students learn a variety of aspects of 3D printing.
STEM Outreach: Science Matters camp engages students to learn about the moon and beyond
Students in Science Matters, a summer enrichment camp held at Auburn University and hosted by the STEM Outreach Center in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, learn about exciting STEM topics, and engage in hands-on activities all summer long. During the week of June 5 – 9, over 80 students in grades one to six engaged in fun-filled space-themed field trips, activities and guest speakers.
Auburn University hosts in-person state-wide science and engineering fair for the first time
Auburn University welcomed almost 200 of the brightest and most creative middle and high school minds for the Alabama State Science and Engineering Fair (ASEF) to the new Academic Classroom and Laboratory Complex (ACLC) on Saturday, April 1. Students from 47 different schools throughout Alabama presented posters of their independent research to over 150 judges from across the state while competing for nearly $15,000 in awards. Presenting in research competitions can be intimidating, but these 6th through 12th grade students were experienced presenters by the time they visited the Plains. To qualify for ASEF they won their local and regional science fairs.
Student teams excel at South’s BEST regional robotics championship
Middle and high school students put weeks of preparation to the test as they competed at the South’s BEST regional robotics championship held December 3-4 at Auburn University’s Beard-Eaves-Memorial Coliseum.
Hosted by the STEM Outreach Center in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, G.U.T.S., or Getting Under the Surface, is an evening program for elementary students that includes snacks followed by a 60-minute activity designed to spark interest in science through hands-on activities.
This fall, families had a unique opportunity to learn about science at the COSAM Campfires outreach event while exploring Alabama’s natural plants and habitat in a picturesque, botanical setting at Auburn University.
Local middle school teams compete in annual Auburn Mathematical Puzzle Challenge
On November 5, 13 teams of 7th and 8th grade students worked collaboratively to solve mathematical puzzles at the 2022 Auburn Mathematical Puzzle Challenge, or AMP’D.
Where can students go to observe how astronomers see stars through spectroscopy, watch flames dance along a Rubens tube and visit the largest snake in Alabama? Destination STEM, of course!
After five sessions covering topics like genomes, weather, dinosaurs, rocks, forensics, space and more, the Office of Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, concluded its final Science Matters camp. The camp impacted 340 total students in rising 1st-6th grades over the summer. Science Matters provided elementary students with a supercharged science experience exploring various themes in science through age-appropriate experiments, technology, art projects and hands-on activities.
From July 11–15, the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, hosted introductory and intermediate 3D printing and design camps, giving students an opportunity to engage in creativity while developing software, engineering and design skills through active learning and print projects.
Rising fourth and fifth graders put their technical and engineering skills to the test by learning innovative ways to use electronics, coding and hardware at Makey Makey Camp held June 20-24 at Auburn University’s Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
From June 20-30, Alabama Science in Motion specialists Melissa Kirkland, Roger Birkhead and Dewayne Riddle provided enriching professional development workshops for high school science teachers, with the goal of improving teacher mastery of biology, chemistry and physics subject matter and equipment use.

High school students complete unique, advanced educational experience at Summer Science Institute
Thirteen rising juniors and seniors representing six high schools across Alabama and Georgia completed a week-long Summer Science Institute held June 5-11 on Auburn University’s campus. Hosted by the Office of Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics, or COSAM, the institute is a science program held annually for students with a high aptitude and interest in the fields of science and math.
The Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, kicked off its two-week Robotics Institute on May 31, giving K-12 teachers an extended, hands-on professional development opportunity to learn about various robotics platforms.
Auburn hosts state Science Olympiad tournament
After a two-year hiatus, 22 middle and high schools were brought together on Auburn University’s campus on March 26 to compete in the state Science Olympiad tournament. The competition was the culmination of months of preparation. Teams competed in topics such as earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, math and engineering.
EmpowHER Conference celebrates girls in STEM, inspires a new generation to seek out science
Fittingly held on Feb. 11, designated as the UN International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the second EmpowHER Conference was an inspirational success for more than 80 girls from local schools in attendance. The goal of the mini conference, presented by the Office of Outreach in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) and sponsored by the Society of Women in Science and Mathematics (SWSM), aimed at encouraging 8th-10th grade girls interested in pursuing STEM majors to come and see that there is no particular way a scientist has to look and realize they can be a scientist, too.
On Jan. 28, 2022, middle school students from Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) participated in a robotics competition held at the Hyundai Training Center in Montgomery, AL. Hosted by Auburn University’s Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (SCORE), the competition was a first-time event for these students and a chance to put newly learned STEM skills to action.
Tiger Giving Day is tomorrow, February 23!
The Donald E. Davis Arboretum is renovating an existing meadow space to enhance the educational experience.
Auburn University is gearing up for Tiger Giving Day on Feb. 23, 2022 – its annual online crowdfunding initiative. One project will be the expansion of the Simon-Knowles Innovative Learning Library (SKILL), an outreach initiative designed to loan classroom sets of robotics devices to schools and provide professional development training to K-12 educators in Alabama.
Student teams display robotics, STEM and teamwork skills at 2022 SCORE Showdown
On January 18-20, 2022, student robotics teams from across the nation were able to put hours of hard work to the test as they competed in the 2022 SCORE Showdown held at Great Wolf Lodge in LaGrange, GA. Hosted annually by the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (SCORE) and in partnership with the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation (REC), the event is a premier VEX robotics tournament where school teams across three age levels – elementary, middle and high school – get to showcase innovative robots that they’ve built by competing in a series of qualifying and final matches.
Announcing winners of Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair
The Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF), an affiliate fair of the Regeneron International Science Fair, took place on March 22-23 (6th – 8th grades) and March 30 – April 1 (9th – 12 grades) in an entirely virtual format. Over 70 AU faculty, graduate students and industry professionals volunteered to judge over 60 independent STEM research projects produced by students in a 19-county region of southeast Alabama. The conversion to a virtual fair format was made possible by a grant from the Society for Science, a non-profit organization in Washington, DC, that coordinates the Regeneron Fair system.
COSAM Office of Outreach continues to offer science-centered family fun events
This Fall, COSAM Outreach premiered a new series of family events called “COSAM Campfires.” The Donald E. Davis Arboretum provided the perfect backdrop for these outdoor gatherings. Family units took seats in the grass with snacks and crafts while waiting for the presentations to begin. Faux fires from solar lights designated the socially distanced family spots, and a tissue paper and twinkle light fire display created a center piece for photos.

Students from schools in the surrounding areas participated in this event to qualify for the VEX Robotics State Championship hosted by Auburn University in March.
Let’s Get Ready! The South’s BEST Robotics Championship Starts Its Season.
With the start of school, the BEST Robotics 2018 competition is gearing up for another challenge. BEST, which stands for Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology, is a 25-year-old national program whose goal is to initiate robotics programs at no cost in middle and high schools. The South’s BEST Regional Championship, held by Auburn University’s College of Science and Mathematics (COSAM) and Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, hosts advancing teams from local hubs all over the southeast region of the United States. The South’s BEST Championship is set to be on December 1 and 2, 2018, at Auburn University.
Teachers from throughout Lee County and Phenix City participated in the first of four hands-on training sessions at the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM) through Mission 100, a partnership between the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education (SCORE) at Auburn University and the Robotics Education and Competition (REC) Foundation. Mission 100 provides more than $1,400 worth of equipment and training to each school including VEX-IQ robotics kits, engineering notebook packs, challenge game pieces, teacher workshops and ongoing support.

Answering the nation’s need for more and better-prepared workers in scientific, industrial and technological fields, BEST, which stands for “Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology,” is a middle school and high school robotics program, now in its 25th year nationally and 17th year in Alabama. BEST Robotics is the only robotics program in the nation that is offered to schools at no cost. The not-for-profit, all-volunteer program challenges students to design, build and market a robot to use in a six-week-long series of competitions, culminating in the South’s BEST championship, which is hosted by Auburn University’s College of Sciences and Mathematics and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
Bleep, blop, beep, beeeeeep, bop: Gear up for Summer with robotics camp
The Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, is a new, innovative Auburn University outreach initiative sponsored by the College of Sciences and Mathematics that is designed to more effectively develop and deliver robotics education to K-12 students and teachers. SCORE is hosting several robotics summer camps on the Auburn campus, as well as in Birmingham, in conjunction with the Southern Museum of Flight. Drone Camp at Auburn University will be held June 5-8 for rising seventh- through ninth-grade students. Drone and Aviation Camp at the Southern Museum of Flight in Birmingham will be held June 27-30 for rising sixth- through ninth-grade students. Summer SCORE half-day camps at Auburn University will be held July 10-14 for rising third- through sixth-grade students. Chaotic Robotics at Auburn University will be held July 24-28 for rising seventh- through ninth-grade students. Chaotic Robotics at the Southern Museum of Flight will be held July 31 to Aug. 4 for rising seventh- through ninth-grade students. The cost to participate varies based on the camp, and a discount is offered for Auburn University employees. Registration is now open, and there are a few slots remaining. “Drink Beer! Save a Species!” is the new mantra of the College of Sciences and Mathematics’ Alabama Natural Heritage Program, which has teamed up with Red Clay Brewery in Opelika to conserve native Alabama wildlife. Beginning Thursday, Feb. 23, one dollar of each pint sold of a new brew, Drymarchon Berliner Weisse, will benefit conservation efforts of COSAM scientists who are working to reintroduce the Eastern Indigo snake to the Alabama landscape.
The drive to strive: COSAM to host regional, state Science Olympiad
The College of Sciences and Mathematics’ Office of Outreach has long hosted regional Science Olympiad competitions for K-12 students. This year, for the first time, the COSAM Office of Outreach will host the middle and high school state competitions.
Faculty Spotlight: Tj Nguyen, assistant director of the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education
Tj Nguyen is the assistant director of the Southeastern Center of Robotics Education, or SCORE, an Auburn University outreach initiative designed to prepare future generations of STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math, professionals by developing and delivering student robotics programs, online robotics resources, and professional development for educators. Nguyen, of Birmingham, received his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at Auburn in 2013. He completed his master’s degree in secondary science education in 2016, and is projected to complete a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2017. He has worked with the College of Sciences and Mathematics Office of Outreach since 2009, previously as a student program coordinator.
Fifty-eight teams from five states compete in robotics championship at Auburn University
The South’s BEST Robotics Championship took place at Auburn University Dec. 3-4 and featured the top 58 teams from 16 hubs located in five southeastern states. South’s BEST, or Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology, is headquartered at Auburn and sponsored by the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.

High school students competing in COSAM Outreach program win international awards
Students who competed in the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair, or GEARSEF, received honors at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest pre-college science competition.
College of Sciences and Mathematics hosts South’s BEST Robotics championship
BEST Robotics is a national robotics program for middle and high school students that culminates in one of three regional championships, including South’s BEST, which is hosted by the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. “BEST” stands for “Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology,” and the South’s BEST championship is headquartered at Auburn University. This year the championship featured the top 55 teams from Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida.
Project Lead the Way hosted at Auburn University
The College of Sciences and Mathematics Office of Outreach, in collaboration with the Women in Science and Engineering Institute (WISE), recently hosted the annual Alabama Project Lead the Way (PLTW) State Conference at the Auburn University Student Center. Approximately 211 teachers, school administrators and counselors were in attendance.
Southeastern BEST Robotics championship to take place at Auburn University
The public will have an opportunity to witness the enthusiastic, sports-like environment surrounding BEST Robotics as the 2015 South’s BEST championship will take place on the Auburn University campus in Beard Eaves Memorial Coliseum on Dec. 5 and 6.
War Eagle BEST Robotics season begins
War Eagle BEST Robotics, an annual program sponsored by COSAM and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, has kicked off the 2015 season. Each fall, teams of middle and high school students from schools located in East Central Alabama and West Georgia design, build and program a robot from a kit of raw materials through implementation of the engineering design process. The six-week program culminates in a one-day, arena competition. Winners will advance to the regional South’s BEST competition, also hosted by Auburn University.

War Eagle BEST Robotics winners announced, five teams advance to South’s BEST
Answering the nation’s need for more and better-prepared workers in scientific, industrial and technological fields, BEST Robotics (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) is a middle school and high school robotics program, now in its 21st year nationally and 13th year in Alabama, that is available to all schools at no cost. BEST is the third-largest educational robotics program in the nation and is the only one that is free to schools. The not-for-profit, all-volunteer program challenges students to design, build and market a robot to use in a six-week-long series of competitions, culminating in a regional championship.

On April 26, the Department of Outreach hosted AU Explore. AU Explore is an annual science and math festival offered to fifth- through eighth-grade students and their teachers. Featured activities included a variety of live, large-scale science demo shows, including the Birds of Prey Show hosted by the Southeastern Raptor Center. COSAM faculty and students also offered dozens of hands-on mini-courses called "Science Fun Shops" in which participants did things like dissecting sheep eyes. Students also handled live animals. COSAM awards the 2012 Dean’s Outstanding Outreach Award
COSAM named two recipients of the 2012 Dean’s Outstanding Outreach Award, David King, professor of geology, and Ash Abebe, associate professor of mathematics and statistics. The annual Outstanding Outreach Award is given to COSAM faculty members with recent records of service and outreach performance that extend beyond normal expectations.
