intro
Grants represent a type of financial aid based on need, and they do not need to be repaid. Your eligibility is based on the information you provide on your FAFSA application. Undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree and demonstrate appropriate need, may be eligible for the following programs.
Federal Grants
Awarded to students with significant financial need who are seeking their first undergraduate degree. Eligibility is determined by the FAFSA, and amounts may vary from year to year.
Students may not receive Federal Pell Grant for more than the equivalent of 12 full time terms.
Awarded to undergraduate students with the greatest financial need; helps supplement the Federal Pell Grant.
Available to students enrolled in specific College of Education programs. This grant provides funds to postsecondary students who are studying in federally designated critical-need education areas and are committed to serving as full-time, highly qualified teachers in low-income schools for a minimum of four years. Failure to fulfill the four-year service agreement leads to the conversion of the grant into a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan, requiring full repayment with interest.
This new program replaces Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants (IASG) and Children of Fallen Heroes (CFH) Awards with modified eligibility criteria. This grant program is for students whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001, or actively serving as and performing the duties of a public safety officer. Recipients must be less than 33 years old as of the first January 1 of the processing year and may receive a maximum Pell Grant regardless of their Student Aid Index (SAI). Students who self-identify on the FAFSA will be required to provide documentation to our office to verify eligibility.
State Grants
State-funded grants for approximately $1000 per academic year are available to Alabama residents who demonstrate high financial need. Generally, students must be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, apply early, be an Alabama resident and meet other eligibility requirements to be considered. Funds for this program are very limited.
