Student Education

While OIT staff are not teaching in classrooms every day, our efforts have an impact. We connect with students at Camp War Eagle to help set them up for technological success before classes ever start. The IT Service Desk provides hands-on education to student employees and facilitates education for students with technical questions. Campus Web Solutions also provides hands-on education to co-op students who design and build websites and web applications. And our Multimedia and Classroom team provide the in-class technology that allows students to learn in an environment that promotes engagement and growth.

The IT Service Desk is primarily run by 4 full-time staff who are assisted by 22-25 students throughout the year. The Service Desk provides hands-on education to student employees as they work with the staff to respond to tens of thousands of requests every year. Those requests are made up of phone calls, emails, chat sessions, online service requests, and walk-in visitors.

Student Employees also helped welcome incoming freshmen at all 10 Camp War Eagle sessions through the Spring and Summer, and they connected with over 1500 incoming students. They also took time to help promote Cybersecurity Awareness at Auburn's Family Fun Day in June.

Campus Web Solutions, or CWS, is a team of six co-op students who work for the Application Development Team within OIT. Each year, these students are tasked with a variety of projects that allow them hands-on experience while providing an excellent service for the campus.

In 2019, CWS moved into a new office space which allowed them even greater opportunities for collaboration and growth. Some of the most notable projects that these students worked on in 2019 were an app to assist those who attend the annual Open House at the Vet School, a program for students to sign up for Flunch (a mentoring program sponsored by SGA), a website for Auburn's Camps & Programs offerings, and a kiosk for ROTC students to record their mandated study hours.

By way of contribution to the education that takes place in classrooms, the Multimedia & Classroom Design (MMCD) group works year-round to repair and update existing classrooms and outfit new buildings with the necessary techology. Some of the largest classroom projects in 2019 were 10 classrooms plus meeting spaces in the Graduate Business Building; 3 classrooms, 2 labs, 4 conference rooms, and other spaces in the Brown Kopel Engineering Building; 2 classrooms and various conference rooms in the Leach Science Center; and all new computers for every classroom in the Haley Center.

In addition to the classroom buildings, the MMCD group also worked on a video wall and distribution for the Gouge Performing Arts Center, sound systems and TVs in the Men's Basketball Locker Room, a new AV system in the new Band Hall, and a replacement video wall in the football weight room, just to name a few.
