Foreign Language Immersion Experience – August 11-13, 2022
Foreign language immersion experiences are offered in German, Korean, and Spanish.
Conducted by faculty in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts, This program is an opportunity for students to be immersed in one of these languages/cultures without leaving Auburn University campus.
During this two-and-a-half day program, students will sharpen their skills in a way that is both fun and interactive. Each class will participate in cultural activities while engaging in their chosen language.
This program is being supported by the Auburn University Senate Departmental Award for Excellence in Education and the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts.
Program Schedule: Begins on Thursday, August 11 and ends on Sunday, August, 13
- Thursday, August 11: 3:00 – 9:00 P.M.
- Friday, August 12: 9:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M.
- Saturday, August 13: 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.
Discounted Fee: $75
Foreign Language Major or Minor Fee: $125
Non-Foreign Language Major or Minor
Please note, accepted students will make a language pledge:
Students will agree to speak only the target language from the beginning of the workshop until the end of the workshop. Students should understand that their commitment to speak only in the target language will increase their confidence, improve their skills, and let them reap the most benefit from this mini-immersion experience.

Traci O’Brien, Associate Professor of German, and Gilda Socarrás, Associate Professor of Spanish, have both been at Auburn since 2006 and have collaborated on many projects involving foreign language teaching. They are both committed to helping students achieve advanced language proficiency at the undergraduate level and therefore value and support the immersion experience at home and abroad.

4:00-5:00pm | Vocabulary & theme building based on movie viewing |
5:00 – 6:00pm | Movie script activities |
6:00 – 7:00pm | Dinner |
7:00 - 9:00pm | Movie screening with target language subtitles |
Day 2, August 12, Friday:
8:15 – 9:00am | Light breakfast in target language groups |
9:00 – 10:30am | Work with short story (themes/vocabulary) |
10:30 – 11am | Break |
11:00am – 12:30pm | Work with short story (themes/vocabulary) |
12:30 – 1:30pm | Working lunch – break into groups, make plans |
1:30 – 3:30pm | Make group videos based on short story |
3:30 – 4:00pm | Break |
4:00 – 6:00pm | Watch group videos; Q&A session |
6:00 – 7:00pm | Dinner |
7:00 – 8:30pm | Culturally authentic games |
Day 3, August 13, Saturday:

9:00 – 10:00am | QR codes scavenger hunt |
