Internships in state government offer a real-world perspective of how the executive and legislative branches operate. Students can participate in everyday activities within one of the many departments of the Office of the Governor, engage with the Lt. Governor’s Office and his priorities, or observe how policy becomes law by interning in the State Legislature during the Legislative Session. Internship opportunities are available during the spring, summer and fall semesters.

Internships with the Office of the Governor

The Governor’s summer internship program provides students an opportunity to participate in the routine activity within a gubernatorial administration. Interns can assist in several offices of their choosing: Appointments, Communications, Policy, Education and Workforce Transformation, and Cabinet Agencies.

In special circumstances, law internships can be secured with the Governor’s legal team.

Internships with the Office of the Lieutenant Governor

In addition to learning about the legislative process, interns with the Lieutenant Governor’s Office will work on priority issues related to the military, workforce, small business and aerospace. These opportunities are available spring, summer and fall semesters.

Internships with the Alabama State Legislature

Legislative internships occur in the spring during the regularly scheduled Legislative Session. These opportunities allow students to engage with state leaders, observe the legislative process and learn how or if hundreds of bills become state law. Selected students will be placed in House or Senate offices working from the start of the Legislative Session until its completion. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the various issues that impact the state of Alabama.
