Build Accessibility into your video production

If you are planning to create a video from beginning to end, now is the perfect time to consider how you will implement accessibility.  You do not have to have a big budget to create a good accessible video. The following guide will help you create an accessible video:

 

Write your script

When you write your script, be sure to include all necessary descriptions of images, visual aids, activity, or text. 

Use Storyboards

Plan your shots to determine whether you will need to use a tripod or device. Video shot by handheld devices is not recommended due to the additional shaky motion.

Select Your Camera

Digital cameras, smartphones, tablets, ipads, and computer cameras are all good options for creating videos for online. 

Test Your Audio

Be sure your audio recording is clear.  You may need to use a microphone or a separate device for audio recording.

Plan Your Lighting

Use studio lights, lamps, flashlights, or other bright light sources to light your subjects.  Good lighting is key to a crisp video image.

White Balance Your Camera

Before you begin recording, it is important to white balance your camera.  Most digital cameras will have this function. If you are using a smartphone, download a video app to white balance your shots and adjust lighting effects. 

Check your colors

Be aware of color contrast when creating your shots if you want things to stand out. Wearing the color white or busy patterns is not recommended for video recordings due to visual vibrations that may occur.

Speak Clearly

Articulate and speak loud enough for the microphones to pick your voice up over any background noise which should be kept to a minimum.

Use Transitions Wisely

No matter what program you use to edit your video, you should make your shot transitions and edits smooth.  In other words, avoid flashing images or lights that may cause

Add Captions

You can add captions during the editing process or after you have produced your video. The steps will vary depending on your editing software.
