Selecting Good Video and Audio Files

Use good judgement when selecting video and audio files.

  • Do not choose grainy or consistently out-of-focus videos.
  • Check videos to ensure there are no rapidly flickering images as these can cause seizures.
  • Check the contrast in your video images. If you viewed the video in black and white would you be able to determine what the images are?
  • Audio needs to clear and remain at a consistent volume throughout the track.

The images below are examples of imagery to avoid in your video choices:

Blurry chalkboard with illegible writing.
Fast moving lights.
Grainy image of people sitting in classroom.

Meeting 508 Standards

Standards

  1. Pages shall be designed to avoid causing the screen to flicker with a frequency greater than 2 Hz and lower than 55 Hz
  2. Web pages shall be designed so that all information conveyed with color is also available without color, for example from context or markup.

How to Meet the Standard

  1. No element on the page flashes at a rate of 2 to 55 cycles per second, thus reducing the risk of optically-induced seizures.
  2. Color is not used solely to convey important information, and Sufficient contrast is provided.

Who does this help?
Choosing quality video and audio helps everyone!
