About SPDI
The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the systematic study of teaching and learning. It involves identifying a problem, asking a question, gathering evidence, drawing conclusions based on that evidence, and making those findings public for the benefit of others. SoTL research can be conducted by faculty with any level of experience, is an excellent opportunity to improve your pedagogy, and represents a scholarly contribution.
The purpose of the Biggio Center’s SoTL Project Development Institute (SPDI) is to support a cohort of faculty (“SoTL Scholars”) in the design, implementation, and dissemination of their own SoTL research projects. Faculty are encouraged to apply in small teams or as individuals.
SPDI will support selected SoTL Scholars throughout a research project that involves: (1) identifying a problem, (2) writing research questions, (3) becoming familiar with relevant literature, (4) selecting appropriate quantitative or qualitative methods, (5) submitting an IRB, (6) collecting data, (7) analyzing data, and (8) writing an article for publication in a SoTL journal or a proposal to submit for a SoTL grant.
Interested faculty should expect to commit to a two-semester dive into SoTL that will include reading, learning, presenting, and conducting SoTL research. SoTL Scholars will meet as a cohort twice a month to share progress, discuss findings, and brainstorm ways to overcome barriers that pop up. Information and guidance from a range of campus experts and units will be provided. Reach out to the Biggio Center to learn more.
