OIT By the Numbers - Network Data

Campus Network Improvements

The campus network team works tirelessly to make sure that there is reliable network connectivity for both wired and wireless devices on campus. Whether in dorms, classrooms, or computer labs, here's some data on our campus network:

1,627 - Wireless access points added to campus in 2018

350 - Network switches added or replaced in 2018

$2,291,437 - Spent on network improvements in 2018

71,650 - The average number of devices connected wirelessly throughout any given week

22,000 - The average number of wired connections on campus

Those improvements allow connectivity all over campus for various purposes, but that also means that we consume a great deal of network bandwidth. The graph below indicates the amount of data in and out of campus at any point in time, and you can see we are functioning near 90% capacity during peak usage times. To improve that situation, OIT began plans in 2018 to double the bandwidth for our campus.
