HoloLens & Augmented Reality

A Tool for Interactive Learning

HoloLens is Microsoft's Augmented Reality (AR) solution, and Danny Moody, a member of the Enterprise Application Services team, has been working with them to bring AR into the classroom. The biggest project to date has been in partnership with the vet school to create an immersive experience while studying the anatomy of horses' eyes.

Using HoloLens allows students to zoom into elements of the eye, see cross sections and different nerve paths, and see functions in real time. The device also hooks up to computers so those who aren't wearing the headset can see the same thing. Teachers can use this to point out certain features and direct the students to find them.

While the current use on campus is fairly limited, the potential for this technology is great, and OIT is excited to have a role in helping develop that content for interactive and immersive learning.
