The most prestigious mathematics departments in the Southeast were recently represented during the 1,146th Meeting of the American Mathematical Society, held at Auburn University March 15-17, 2019, inside the Mell Classroom Building @ RBD Library. “I’m not exaggerating too much to say that essentially every serious mathematics department in the Southeast was represented at the meeting,” said Luke Oeding, associate professor and main local organizer of the event. “And while the about 550 participants came primarily from the Southeast, we also had many from all over the United States and several international locations. It was a real honor for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and COSAM to host such a major event!” Special sessions took place on 27 different topics including algebra, analysis, geometry, graph theory, probability, applied mathematics, and other interesting areas. Plenary lecture topics spanned probability, algebraic geometry and optimization, as well as graph theory and neuroscience. “This conference was motivation for me to continue research in my programs,” said Seonguk Kim from DePauw University in Indiana. “I had a great time at the sessions on recent advances in numerical methods and random discrete structures.” Garth T. Isaak from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, enjoyed his experience at this year’s conference. “I really liked the convenient location of the hotel across the street and I listened to great speakers throughout the entire conference,” he said. Tyler Moss traveled to the conference from the West Virginia University Institute of Technology. “I liked catching up with people that I have not seen in a long time at this conference,” Moss said. “Auburn University has a great campus for the conference and it was great to walk around such a nice area.” Timothy Huber from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley said he viewed the event as a great opportunity to connect with new researchers in his field of study. “I met lots of young faculty that I will continue to discuss ideas with after I return home,” he said. “The Mell Classrooms are nice and the layout has been really beneficial,” said Chad Mangum from Niagara University in New York said he thought the classrooms inside Mell were nice and the layout was beneficial. “I could easily attend closely related session in both the same area of mathematics and the same area in the building,” he said. Lauren Grimley from Spring Hill College in Alabama shared, “I liked the chance to listen to a broad set of speakers during this conference, especially the sessions on Lie theory.” Auburn University’s Ming Liao spoke at an invited plenary address on a similar topic, Invariant Markov processes under actions of Lie groups.
Dr. Mark Carpenter has been awarded a grant for $22,173.00 from Dynetics, Inc.
Dr. Ming Liao, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), teaches mathematics to both undergraduate and graduate students at Auburn University. After completing his doctorate degree at Stanford University, he has spent the last three decades teaching his passion. His research interest involves probability theory including stochastic processes in Lie groups and manifolds. “I enjoy helping students learn about mathematics and increasing their knowledge in this field,” said Dr. Liao. “I also make incremental contributions to research in our department.” On Friday, March 15, 2019, Dr. Liao will give a lecture, just one of three plenary addresses, at this year’s Spring Southeastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society. More than 500 people will be attending this event from March 15 – 17 at Auburn University. “I am proud that I was recommended by my own peers to give this address,” he said. “I have been to the conference and attended sessions throughout my career. This is the first time I have ever given a major lecture at this conference and it is being held right here at our university.”

First Department of Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium of Semester Features Netherlands Professor
For its first colloquium of the semester, the Auburn University Department of Mathematics and Statistics recently hosted Dr. Stefanie Sonner from Radboud University Nijmegen in The Netherlands. During the Jan. 11 colloquium, titled “Deterministic Continuum Models for Spatially Heterogeneous Biofilm Communities,” Dr. Sonner discussed the important role biofilms play in various natural and industrial systems and mathematical models for their growth. “More than 80 percent of bacterial cells in typical water ecosystems live in biofilm communities and not as free-loading bacterial cells,” Dr. Sonner explained. During the colloquium, presented by Mathematics professor Xiaoying Han, the prototype growth model was discussed as well as several more recent multi-species extensions that take further biofilm processes into account. Analytical results were also shown and numerical simulations presented to illustrate the model behavior.

For COSAM Graduation Marshal Abigail Gauthier, a double major in biomedical sciences and Spanish, meeting the healthcare needs of the Hispanic population is both a goal and passion. “My mom immigrated to the United States from Columbia when she was a little girl, so a lot of my family is bilingual, so it’s very important to me to be formally trained in the Spanish language and to explore that part of my heritage,” said Gauthier. “My family integrated pretty quickly, but I want to help people who may be struggling more than they did. I think that immigrants face a really big challenge in a monolingual healthcare system, and I think it’s something that a lot of people don’t realize or don’t talk about, and it’s really important. It’s a need that I could help alleviate if I worked really hard. Just being able to communicate with someone in their native language is really important to help them feel more comfortable, and because trust is such a huge part of medicine, it is important to me to make them feel as comfortable as possible.”

The story of Curt Lindner’s life and career as a mathematician is on full display in his office. Stacks of books and papers cover everything from his desk to a small sofa pushed against a wall. No surface is left untouched. Even the walls are adorned with photographs, notes and drawings, each one a memento of his life and career. Lindner is Distinguished University Professor at Auburn University, and the material in his office represents 48-years of service at Auburn. Featured prominently on his office walls is his best friend, fellow mathematician Alexander Rosa, professor emeritus at McMaster University in Canada. Lindner and Rosa met for the first time, face-to-face, in 1970 at a mathematics conference at the University of Montreal. The two immediately hit it off and began a life-long friendship and working relationship.

Auburn University's College of Sciences and Mathematics is "flipping the classroom" as part of an innovative way to teach Auburn students through a newly constructed Engaged in Active Student Learning, or EASL, classroom. Working with the Office of the Provost, the college is leading Auburn's effort on the unusual design since all Auburn students must take core classes in the college prior to graduating. "In contrast to traditional classrooms where faculty teach 'at' students, often in stadium-style rooms, this room was designed to encourage teacher-student interactions, and student-student collaborations, two aspects which are known to lead to improved learning outcomes," said COSAM Dean Nicholas Giordano. "COSAM faculty spent many months preparing to use the EASL classroom as effectively as possible in their teaching, and the new space was ready to use at the beginning of the fall 2014 semester."
